Soften
Jaw & Neck Release
Focused remedial treatment for TMJ tension, jaw discomfort, clenching, grinding, headaches, facial tightness and neck strain.
Support for TMJ tension, clenching and jaw discomfort
SOFTEN is a targeted remedial treatment designed to support the muscles and surrounding tissues involved in TMJ tension, clenching, grinding, facial tightness, headaches and neck strain.
Treatment may include external jaw work, buccal massage, facial massage, temple work, neck treatment, chest work, upper shoulder treatment, and work around the base of the skull.
Manual lymphatic drainage is integrated throughout the session to support fluid movement, reduce congestion and help the surrounding tissues settle.
This treatment may also suit clients who prefer to remain face up, while still receiving focused remedial work through the jaw, face, neck, head and shoulders.
Intraoral buccal massage may be offered where clinically appropriate, always with informed consent.
Some of the reasons people seek this work include...
Jaw tension, clenching or grinding.
TMJ discomfort or tightness around the jaw joint.
Facial tightness or tenderness around the jaw, cheeks or temples.
Headaches linked with neck, jaw, temple or upper shoulder tension.
Neck strain or restricted movement.
A feeling of pressure, puffiness or congestion in the face, jaw or head.
Tension through the chest, shoulders, base of the skull or scalp.
Stress-related jaw holding.
You prefer to remain face up while receiving focused remedial treatment through the jaw, face, neck, head and shoulders.
You want focused work through the face and head, while still receiving a treatment grounded in remedial assessment and care.
Who is this treatment for?
SOFTEN is suitable for clients experiencing TMJ tension, jaw tightness, clenching, grinding, facial tightness, headaches, neck strain, upper shoulder tension, or a feeling of congestion through the face and head.
This treatment may be helpful if your jaw feels tight or overworked, if you wake with tension through your face or neck, or if you notice yourself holding tension in your jaw during the day.
It may also suit clients who prefer to remain face up for treatment, particularly where the main areas needing support are the jaw, face, neck, head, chest and upper shoulders.
SOFTEN can be a good option if you want focused remedial treatment that still feels calm, supportive and settling.
If your symptoms require support beyond the scope of remedial massage, referral options can be discussed.

-
Intraoral buccal massage involves working with the jaw and cheek muscles from inside the mouth.
This may be offered where clinically appropriate, but it is always optional and only included with your informed consent.
If intraoral work is not right for you on the day, treatment can remain entirely external and still be supportive.
-
Your session closes with a short post-treatment check-in.
This may include observations from the treatment, aftercare, and any suggested next steps.
After treatment, you may notice less tension through the jaw, face, head, neck or shoulders. Some people feel lighter through the face, clearer through the head, or more aware of how they hold tension through the jaw.

FAQ
-
SOFTEN is best suited for TMJ tension, jaw tightness, clenching, grinding, facial tightness, headaches, neck strain and upper shoulder tension.
It is also a good option if you feel congestion, pressure or heaviness through the face, jaw or head.
-
Buccal massage is a technique that works with the cheek and jaw muscles from inside the mouth.
It may be helpful for some jaw tension patterns, particularly where the muscles of the cheek, jaw and face are involved.
Buccal massage is only included when clinically appropriate and with your informed consent.
-
Intraoral work may be offered where clinically appropriate, but it is never assumed.
You will be talked through what it involves before anything begins, and it will only be included with your clear consent.
You can choose to keep the session entirely external.
-
No.
Many people receive external jaw, face, neck, head and shoulder work only. Intraoral work can be helpful for some presentations, but it is only one part of the treatment.
-
Yes.
Manual lymphatic drainage is integrated throughout the session to support fluid movement, reduce congestion and settle the surrounding tissues.
This is not the same as a full-body lymphatic drainage session. It is focused around the face, jaw, neck and nearby drainage pathways.
-
The work can feel specific, especially around areas of jaw or neck tension, but it should still feel manageable.
Pressure is adapted to your comfort throughout the session. You can ask for the pressure to be changed, or for any part of the treatment to pause or stop.
-
SOFTEN may be supportive when headaches are linked with jaw, neck, temple or upper shoulder tension.
If your headaches are new, severe, changing, or accompanied by other symptoms, it is best to speak with your GP or appropriate health professional.
-
You can get in touch first, and your therapist can help you work out whether SOFTEN is an appropriate starting point.
If your jaw locks, gets stuck, has significantly reduced movement, or your pain is chronic, worsening or strongly joint-based, you may be referred to a dentist, GP, physiotherapist, or orofacial/TMJ specialist for further assessment.
SOFTEN may still be helpful alongside that care, especially where there is muscle tension, clenching, facial tightness, neck strain or headaches involved.
